Sudeha insisted her husband Sudharma marry her younger sister Ghushma also for procreation. Initially, Sudharma was reluctant but upon insistence from his wife Sudeha, consented to marriage with Ghushma too.

Ghushma was a pious and religious lady. She was a devout devotee of Lord Shiva. She used to daily worship 101 earthly Shiva Lingas. Her ties with her husband Sudharma were very cordial. With the blessings of Lord Shiva, she gave birth to a male child. Sudharma, Sudeha, and Ghusma all were very happy and living comfortably but gradually a feeling of neglect and frustration crept into the heart of Sudeha who started feeling ill about her sister Ghushma and her son.

Sudeha thought that over the period she had lost the grip on her husband Sudharma who is more inclined towards her sister Ghushma who had been blessed with a son. The child from Ghushma grew up and was of marriageable age. Soon his parents got him married to a young beautiful girl.

The element of neglect, frustration, and ill will creep into the heart of Sudeha against Ghushma’s son to such an extent that she was led to kill the son of Ghushma when he was sleeping. She succeeded in executing her nefarious plot or design and disposed of the body of the son of Ghushma in the nearby pond where Ghushma used to go to worship Lord Shiva and immerse the earthly Shiva Lingas daily.

The next day, in the morning everyone came to know about the tragedy and people wept and wailed. It was a chaotic situation. Sudharma and his daughter-in-law were in grief. But Ghushma was poised and calm, busy in her worship as usual. After her worship, she immersed the earthly Shiva Lingas in the pond and as she started to return from the pond, she saw her loving son coming out of the pond. He fell at the feet of Ghushma.

According to the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Story, Lord Shiva appeared there and looked very angry at the misdeeds of Sudeha and was about to slit her throat with His Trident. Immediately, Ghushma requested Him with folded hands to forgive her elder sister Sudeha although she committed a heinous crime, Ghushma also told Lord Shiva that with your blessings, she could get her son back to life. She further requested Lord Shiva to make the place his permanent abode. Lord Shiva acceded to both of Ghushma’s requests.

Lord Shiva established Himself in the form of Jyotirlinga, at Grishneshwar. Owing to the intense worship of His devout devotee, Ghushma, the abode of Lord Shiva here came to be known as Ghushmeshwar Mahadev.
