Nakshatras – The Sky Map

Introduction:

The term “nakshatras” holds a fascinating essence, as it derives from two components: “naks,” signifying “sky,” and “shetra,” meaning “region.” Together, they form a “sky map.” In the realm of Vedic astrology, nakshatras are an integral facet. These 27 nakshatras essentially map our voyage from birth to the inevitable moment of departure.

In antiquity, people first turned to the moon to measure time and connect with the stars. “Nakshatras” designates the constellations or “mansions” of the moon, as the moon resides within each of these constellations for a day.

Nakshatras are the glittering stars that adorn the night sky, the constellations that grace our galaxy. Sage Parashara eloquently put it, “God has adorned the heavens with constellations like pearls on a dark sheet. The light of the sun hides during the day, revealing all knowledge in the darkness of the night.”

Rulers of Nakshatras:

Governed by the moon, nakshatras exclusively grace the night sky. These stars are the foundation of astrology, for zodiac signs or “Rashis” emerge from nakshatras, and the two remain inseparable. Nakshatras effortlessly integrate into the Rashis.

Astrologically, 27 nakshatras yield diverse astrological outcomes. These nakshatras are divided into three segments based on elemental signs: fire, earth, air, and water. The demarcations manifest at the “gandanta break,” where fire and earth elements converge.

The Significance of Birth Nakshatra:

The birth moon’s presence in Ashwini / Magha / Moola / Ashlesha / Jyestha / Revati indicates a “gand moola” dosh, signifying a transition from fire to water or vice versa. The birth nakshatra, reflecting the moon’s nakshatra at birth, is pivotal, determining life’s trajectory. Auspicious ceremonies like weddings, land purchases, and housewarmings are scheduled based on the moon’s position in favorable nakshatras, aligned with their nature.
