Vishwakarma Puja 2024:

An important Indian festival of the Hindus is the ‘Vishwakarma puja’ which is dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma who is considered as the divine carpenter, the divine builder, and the architect of the gods. Hence this year it was celebrated on the last day of the Bengali month ‘Bhadra’ which is in the month of either August or September as per the Gregorian calendar. Vishwakarma Puja is also known as the Architects ‘day devoted to Lord Vishwakarma, the God of creation. The next Vishwakarma Puja falls on 16-Sep-2024 as per the Drik Panchang.

This festival is dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma for making the most beautiful objects on the earth and the god’s heavenly residence.

Vishwakarma Puja

In remembrance of Lord Vishwakarma’s birth, Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated. On this day every year, people gather at Kanya Sanskriti Muhurat for the Vishwakarma Puja Aarti. In Indian mythology, Lord Vishwakarma was a venerated carpenter and architect, making it a very special day for blue-collars. People in workplaces consider Vishwakarma Puja to be a fortunate occasion.

This day inspires people to continue perfecting their craft in their field of choice, and they believe they will be blessed by Lord Biswakarma with the puja. Engineers and factory workers worship the idol of the god alongside electrical tools. During this day, streets and walkways may be overcrowded.In addition, the adults recite the mantras and prepare the pooja naivedyam sweets while the children are also taught to take part and enjoy the pooja.

Lord Vishwakarma

The Indian mythology also speaks of Lord Vishwakarma, commonly referred to as Devashilpi – a lord and architect.

He created the thrones, castles, cars, and treasures of Indian gods and goddesses. Workers or employees eagerly await his birthday for this reason! As the son of Lord Brahma, he was born from Lord Brahma’s right thumb and was blessed with artistic abilities.

The Rig Veda and the Sthapadya Ved mention Lord Vishwakarma for his expertise in science and mechanics. He also had extensive knowledge of Vastu, making him history’s first engineer. He gained popularity for building the Pushpak Vimana, or legendary flying chariots and palaces, for Lord Kuber following Brahma’s orders. Indeed, Lord Vishwakarma created numerous well-known weapons and mansions.

History Of Vishwakarma Puja

The celestial architect, Lord Vishwakarma, created the universe in accordance with Hindu mythology, traditions, and ancient astrological beliefs. He planned the evolution of the entire world. He is also responsible for  building the holy city of Dwaraka, which was ruled by Lord Krishna. In addition, Lord Vishwakarma constructed the Mahasabha of Pandavas and powerful and unique weapons for God. According to religious sources, Lord Vishwakarma created the three realms of the universe: the mortal realm and its worlds, the celestial realms and other worlds, and the celestial kingdoms and their planets. He constructed many architectural wonders, including Lord Krishna’s residence in Dwarka, the capital of the Dwapara Yuga, Sone ki Lanka in the Treta Yuga, and Swarga in the Satya Yuga (Heaven).

He crafted the arms and vehicles of the gods, giving each distinct heavenly qualities. Furthermore, he revealed the industry sciences, which demonstrate the advancements made.   The Rig Veda, a sacred text in Sanskrit meaning “All Completion,” is credited with designing the extraterrestrial architecture of everything in the galaxy. He is venerated as a sign of respect for all the engineers, architects, craftsmen, manufacturers, weavers, engineers, smiths, garment makers and factory workers.

Celebration of Vishwakarma Puja

People celebrate Vishwakarma Puja, also known as “Biswakarma Puja,” on the last days of the Bengali Bhadra month in Eastern India, including Orissa, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Tripura. They also refer to it as “Sankranti Bhadra” or “Kanya Sankranti.” Artisans worldwide consider Vishwakarma Puja to be the largest and most auspicious day.

In some regions of the nation, especially Bihar and a few northern states, people celebrate Vishwakarma Puja after Diwali. They observe it during the month of “Magh,” according to the Hindu calendar. In the southern state of Kerala, people perform Vishwakarma Puja on the day of Rishi Panchami.

1. On Vishwakarma Jayanti, people offer special prayers in marketplaces, offices, and workplaces. They decorate these locations with lovely floral arrangements, creating a celebratory atmosphere.

2. Devotees of Lord Vishwakarma worship the elephant, known as his “Vahan,” on this day. They conduct the primary puja ceremonies in decorative pandals that hold the idol of Vishwakarma. The relatives of the employees frequently participate in these rites, creating a delightful and enjoyable environment. People exchange greetings of happiness on Biswakarma Puja Day. After the puja, they distribute prasad to every employee.

3. Employees take a day off from work to worship their instruments. On Vishwakarma Jayanti, they prepare an extravagant meal, which everyone, including the owners and employees, enjoys together.

4. In certain places, kite flying is also a custom on this day. Everyone seeks to cut each other’s kites in a dignified way as the sky takes on the appearance of a vibrant battleground.

Rituals of Vishwakarma Puja

Now that everyone is aware of Vishwakarma Puja, we are feeling rather warm and fuzzy. It’s time to look over the step-by-step ritual, or vidhi.

Get up early on the day of Vishwakarma Puja. Make sure you’re clean before the vidhi begins by taking a bath.

Clean every piece of equipment, machinery, and tool you use on a daily basis.

Worship every machine and tool that is in front of you, whether you are at work or at home.

Regarding the Vishwakarma Puja aarti, do not forget to place the picture or Idol of Lord Vishnu and Lord Vishwakarma.

Now, you must offer kumkum, turmeric, gulal, flowers, fruits, nuts, sweets and so on to both the deities during the Vishwakarma Puja.

Draw a rangoli using flour and spread seven grains in the rangoli made area.

And also prepare the kalash filled with water and Ashoka leaves for puja aarti.

Finally, do the Vishwakarma Puja aarti and then light the incense stick for offering to the God.

Chant the Vishwakarma Puja mantra throughout the aarti: It is written as,

‘ॐ आधार शक्तपे नम:, ओम कूमयि नम:, ओम अनन्तम नम:, पृिवेै नम:’.

Various Indian States Celebrate Vishwakarma Puja: 

This festival has been celebrated with a lot of zeal in all the  Indian states, though each state adds its own color to the festivity.

West Bengal: The occasion of Vishwakarma Puja is specially colorful in West Bengal particularly in the industrial area. Fabulous and splendid structures of pandals are prepared and artists and craftsmen demonstrate their artistry with the idols and other decorations. It is one of those occasions characterized by celebrations and social gatherings with friends and family members.

Assam: Vishwakarma Puja is indeed performed meticulously in this state to the best of the traditions. Craftspeople and artisans worship their instruments and apparatuses, seeking blessings for wealth and the achievement of their objectives. Along with feasting, this is a time to celebrate with loved ones.

Orissa: Craftsmen in Orissa pray to Lord Vishwakarma for skill and wealth during the commonly celebrated Vishwakarma Puja. The festivities include dining, cultural performances, and colorful processions.
