Nestled in the serene Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, the Katarmal Sun Temple stands as a testament to ancient Indian architecture and celestial worship. This magnificent temple, second only to Odisha’s Konark Sun Temple in significance, offers visitors a unique glimpse into medieval craftsmanship and astronomical precision.
Dating back to the 9th century CE, the Katarmal Sun Temple was built during the prosperous reign of the Katyuri dynasty. The temple’s construction was commissioned by Katarmalla, a Katyuri king, showcasing the dynasty’s devotion to Surya, the Sun God. Despite its age, the temple complex has maintained much of its original grandeur, though some structures show signs of natural weathering.
