The story of Lord Hanuman begins with a fascinating tale of divine intervention. Born to Anjana, a celestial nymph, and Kesari, a mighty vanara (forest dweller), Hanuman was blessed with extraordinary powers from birth. According to ancient texts, Anjana had received a blessing that she would give birth to an incarnation of Lord Shiva himself.
The most interesting part of Hanuman’s birth story is how he got his name. As a child, he was called Anjaneya (son of Anjana) and Kesari-nandan (son of Kesari). However, the name ‘Hanuman’ came from an incident in his childhood when he leaped towards the sun, mistaking it for a ripe mango. This event led to him being called ‘Hanuman,’ which means ‘one with a disfigured jaw.’
As a young child, Hanuman displayed incredible strength and curiosity. One morning, seeing the rising sun, he thought it was a delicious fruit and jumped thousands of miles to catch it. This act worried the gods, as the world needed the sun. Lord Indra, the king of gods, struck Hanuman with his thunderbolt to stop him, which resulted in an injury to his jaw.
This incident led to an important turning point in Hanuman’s life. Seeing his injured state, the gods came together and blessed him with numerous powers:
However, there was a catch – Hanuman would only remember these powers when someone reminded him of them.
The most significant chapter in Lord Hanuman’s story begins with his meeting with Lord Rama. This encounter happened when Rama and his brother Lakshmana were searching for Sita in the Kishkindha forest. Hanuman, disguised as a brahmin, approached them to understand their purpose.
Upon meeting Rama, Hanuman immediately recognized him as the Supreme Being. His heart filled with devotion, and he revealed his true form. This meeting marked the beginning of one of the most celebrated relationships in Hindu mythology – that of a devoted servant and his divine master.
Perhaps the most famous part of Hanuman’s story is his journey to Lanka. When no one else could cross the vast ocean to find Sita, Hanuman stepped forward. Before making the mighty leap, his fellow vanaras reminded him of his powers, and suddenly, he grew in size and launched himself across the ocean.
Hanuman’s adventures in Lanka showcase his intelligence and devotion:
One of the most dramatic episodes in Hanuman’s story is the burning of Lanka. After being captured by Ravana’s forces, they set his tail on fire as punishment. However, Hanuman used this as an opportunity to teach them a lesson:
“With his burning tail, Hanuman leaped from building to building, setting the golden city of Lanka ablaze.”
This incident demonstrated not just his physical prowess but also his strategic thinking.
During the war between Rama and Ravana, Hanuman played crucial roles:
Even after Rama’s victory and return to Ayodhya, Hanuman’s devotion didn’t diminish. He requested and received the blessing to remain on Earth as long as people spoke of Rama’s story.
What makes Hanuman’s story particularly special is his unconditional devotion. Various incidents showcase this:
