Story of Karwa
There was a woman named Karwa who profoundly loved her husband, and this extreme love bestowed upon her several spiritual powers. As her husband bathed in the river, a crocodile attacked him. The brave Karwa recalled Yama, the Lord of Death, and used cotton yarn to bind the crocodile. She pleaded with Lord Yamraj to sentence the crocodile to death and restore her husband’s life. Though he expressed fear of not being able to, Karwa promised to curse Lord Yama and destroy Yamdev in exchange. Terrified of being cursed by such a kind and caring woman, Yama sent the crocodile to hell and revived her husband. This Karva Chauth story is still recited today, and married women pray to Karva Mata for their husbands’ health and happiness.
