However, Parvati’s father, Himalaya, decided to marry her to Lord Vishnu after witnessing her in this condition. Goddess Parvati chose to aid her companion by kidnapping her after she confided in her about her suffering. She took her to a thick forest, where Maa Parvati performed her sadhana. It was there that Lord Shiva saw the goddess’s devoted practice and approved of her marriage. Since then, unmarried ladies have been celebrating the Hartalika Teej to help them find the husbands of their dreams.

Traditional Foods Associated with Hartalika Teej

Women cook and eat a variety of traditional meals that have cultural and religious significance on Hartalika Teej. Also referred to as satvik or pure vegetarian dinners include rice pudding also known as Kheer, fried bread called Puri and a range of sweets including ghewar and laddoos.
