According to tradition, there once was a demon named Jalandhar who rose to fame for his evil deeds. His wife Brinda’s devotion allowed him to maintain his position of supremacy. She was a very moral woman and a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. All through the night, she prayed for her husband’s health.Feeling angered by Jalandhar’s bad deeds, Lord Vishnu made the decision to stop them. He accepted Brinda’s celibacy and took on the appearance of Jalandhar. As a result, Jalandhar lost the war and met his demise because he was no longer protected.
Upon discovering the reality, Brinda punished Lord Vishnu, transforming him into a stone known as Shaligram. After that, she and her husband’s bodies both set themselves on fire. After then, Lord Vishnu pledged to wed Brinda and changed her soul into the Tulsi plant. In order to keep his word, Lord Vishnu took the appearance of Shaligram and got married to Tulsi on the Prabodhini Ekadashi of her subsequent birth.

Thus, while performing the ritual, Tulsi dresses like a bride wearing a pretty red sari, jewelry, and bindi.The Shaligram stone, representing Lord Vishnu, or the brass image of the deity, is dressed in traditional attire and linked together with a thread for the ceremony. Both men and women of all ages can perform the marriage ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, devotees apply vermilion and rice to both Tulsi and Lord Vishnu.

Celebrations of Tulsi vivah:
Celebrations of Tulsi vivah are held in many temples across India with great grandeur.
The two Rama temples in the Saurashtra region host a spectacular celebration of this event. The celebrations begin on the day when the bride’s temple sends an invitation card to the groom’s temple. A magnificent baraat, or parade, is conducted on the wedding day from the shrine of Lord Vishnu to the temple of Goddess Tulsi. The people of Tulsi cheerfully welcome the baraat, and the event culminates at the temple with bhajan performances all night long and Lord Vishnu bringing Tulsi home on the next day. In many regions, the marriage ritual concludes with the singing of Tulsi Aarti.
