According to Hindu mythology, Sita appeared in front of King Janaka of Mithila when he was cultivating a field in preparation for a Yagya. The sight of the charming newborn girl overwhelmed King Janak and Queen Sunayana with love and compassion. They ecstatically took her in as their own daughter, naming her Sita.Sita literally translates as a little planting or irrigation trench dug by a plough. The origin is from Sanskrit, “seet”, it implies furrow.According to Hindu mythology, Sita is an incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi and Ram is also an incarnation of the Lord Vishnu.

1. Sita Navami is celebrated by most of the Hindu followers, especially married ladies who Worship Devi Sita along with Lord Rama and Lakshmana. There is a small puja mandap put up, and beautiful flowers decorate it. This mandap contains the idols of Lord Rama, Devi Sita, Lakshmana, King Janaka, and Mata Sunayana. On this day, they celebrate Goddess Earth, who appeared as Goddess Sita from a plowed field. Only if people worship Sita as well as Lord Rama in marriage do couples find happiness and mutual understanding. In order to perform the puja, offerings that are brought include fruits, rice, barley and sesame seeds which are also known as til. When Aarti is done a ‘Bhog’ is prepared for the occasion and is served as prasad to all the devotees.

2. On this day most of the women abstain from food as it is called Sita Navami Vrat. It is observed during the day and no food is taken until all the arrangements related with the puja are over. 1. Chant the Sita Chalisa on Sita Navami
