Pitru Paksha is a 16-day period during the Hindu lunar calendar that is observed as a celebration of the ancestors who have passed away. At this time, families hold Shradh, Tarpan, and Pind Daan and give food, water, and prayers. It is in the waning half-moon period of Bhadrapada-Ashwin and culminates on the most important day of remembrance, Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
If the lunar death date is not known or the exact date is missed, families conduct it on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, which is also known as Mahalaya Amavasya. On this final day of Pitru Paksha, all the ancestors are covered irrespective of the actual tithi, and for this reason, this day is mostly celebrated to perform Shradh.
When ancestors' debts are not resolved, Pitru Dosh is said to manifest itself in the form of continuous delays in earning a livelihood, ailments, and marital difficulties and financial misfortunes despite the person's best efforts. These patterns can be seen in the 9th house of the birth chart along with the positions of the planets, and astrologers can recommend remedies accordingly.
There are variations in practices by family, region, and tradition. Women do perform Shradh and Tarpan in many households today, and there are some inheritance systems with varying customs of eligibility. No one is in a position to say the words, so it is best to read carefully and follow the advice of your family elders or a knowledgeable priest in your tradition.
Tarpan is the act of giving water, sesame seeds and prayers to ancestors, typically done every day or on certain tithis. Shradh is a broader ritual practice, which encompasses Tarpan, Pind Daan and the feeding of Brahmins. Shradh is quite a complex procedure that can be performed at home, whereas Tarpan is performed at home itself.
Pind Daan is a ritual where rice balls (pindas) are offered to ancestors to feed the soul on its journey after death. It is believed to be crucial to the attainment of peace for the soul, as well as progression toward liberation. It is a very important ritual, particularly in major towns and cities such as Gaya, Prayagraj, and Varanasi.
Simple offerings and simple Tarpan may be offered and performed at home with sincerity and procedure. But in a formal Shradh, particularly Pind Daan, it is generally believed that it is necessary to have a qualified priest to ensure the correctness of the Sankalp, mantra, and the sequence followed during the ritual; otherwise, the effectiveness of the ritual will be lost.
In general, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onion, and garlic are not used when making preparations for Shradh. Offerings are intended to be kept pure (satvik). New ventures, celebrations, and buying of things such as clothes or vehicles are also traditionally delayed till the end of the fortnight of Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
Some traditions say that if one overlooks Shradh, the debts incurred (Pitru Rin) can remain unsettled and are believed to cause recurring misfortunes in a family's lives. Remedies are taken with faith and sincerity but not absolute certainty, though the intention of the practice and its regularity are more important than perfection.
The final day of Pitru Paksha, known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya, is believed to be the most powerful day for paying respects to all ancestors as a whole. It is particularly significant for those whose death tithi is unknown or whose shradh is missed. Many families do Tarpan, donations, and prayers to complete their fortnight with utmost devotion on this day.
