Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Maha-Parv Navratri masterclass (Navratri Puja Vidhi Course), Vedic astrological rules, and course validity period.

Navratri means “Nine Nights” (Nava = nine, Ratri = night). It is a holy Hindu festival dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, known as Navadurga, who represent divine feminine energy, or Shakti. The festival is observed as Shakti worship to invoke protection, purify body and mind through fasting and prayer, and strengthen virtues like courage, devotion and clarity.
In Vedic Navratri tradition, there are four Navratris: Chaitra (March–April), Sharad (September–October), Magha Gupt (January–February) and Ashadha Gupt (June–July). Sharad Navratri is the most widely celebrated and is linked to Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. Chaitra Navratri begins the Hindu New Year in many regions and ends with Ram Navami. The two Gupt Navratris are followed mainly by spiritual seekers and sadhaks, with Magha focused on knowledge and Ashadha on deep meditation and inner transformation.
Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October. The Ghatasthapana muhurat is from 06:19 AM to 10:12 AM, a window of about 3 hours 53 minutes. The backup Abhijit Muhurat is from 11:44 AM to 12:31 PM. Pratipada Tithi begins at 09:19 PM on 10 October and ends at 09:30 PM on 11 October. Navratri is decided by the tithi in the Panchang, not the solar date, and Kalash Sthapana should be done in the first one-third of the day during Pratipada.
In this Nav Durga course, each of the nine days is paired with one planet: Day 1 Shailaputri (Moon), Day 2 Brahmacharini (Mars), Day 3 Chandraghanta (Venus), Day 4 Kushmanda (Sun), Day 5 Skandamata (Mercury), Day 6 Katyayani (Jupiter), Day 7 Kaalratri (Saturn), Day 8 Mahagauri (Rahu) and Day 9 Siddhidatri (Ketu). Each day of Nav Durga worship includes the Devi’s symbolism, rashi connection, mantras, offerings, food and donation guidance.
No. The word upavasa comes from “upa” and “vas”, meaning “to dwell near.” Classically it means turning away from wrongdoing and dwelling close to virtue, with dietary restriction serving as the boundary of the practice, not its essence. Navratri also falls at ritu-sandhi, the junction between two seasons, when Ayurvedic texts advise lighter eating. This is why the vrat diet uses fruits, milk, sabudana and rock salt (saindhava namak).
Yes, many families do. Choose a clean place, preferably the north-east corner of your home altar. Sow barley or wheat in soil, place a kalash with water, mango leaves, coconut, rice, a coin, betel nut and durva grass, and tie a red or white kalava around its neck. Then install an image of Goddess Durga beside it and light a ghee lamp. This Nav Durga course teaches every step with mantras. If your family follows a specific tradition, check with your elders.
Traditionally, vrat-friendly foods include fruits, milk and curd, sabudana, sama, makhana and kheer, prepared with rock salt. Onion, garlic, deep-fried heavy foods and stimulants such as caffeine spikes are generally avoided, as are alcohol and non-vegetarian food. The course also lists day-wise foods, offerings and Navratri remedies, including items to donate or avoid, matched to each planet.
Kanya Poojan, also called Kanjak or Kumari Pooja, is usually performed on Ashtami (8th day) or Navami (9th day). Young girls aged roughly 2 to 10 are worshipped as living forms of Goddess Durga, representing the Navadurga. Their feet are washed, tilak and a red thread are applied, and they are offered puri, kala chana and halwa along with gifts. Young boys, called Langur, are also honoured as symbols of Bhairav ji or Hanuman ji.
