The celebration takes place in the month of Vaisakha during the Shukla Paksha Tritiya, according to the Hindu calendar. Since the Sanskrit term “Akshaya” has many meanings, Akshaya Tritiya is associated with fortune.

The importance of Akshya Tritya in Jainism

In Jainism, after keeping a fast for more than a year, the first Tirthankara, Lord Rishabhadeva, got his first aahaar (meal) on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. After six months of meditation, Lord Rishabhadeva spent an additional six months looking for someone to offer him his first aahaar while adhering to the correct rites and discipline. He did not meet Hastinapur’s King Shreyansa until after this time. King Shreyansa understood and performed the discipline of aahar-charya from his previous incarnation, and it was only when he offered Lord Rishabhadeva some sugarcane juice that the Tirthankara broke his fast. As a result, Akshaya Tritiya gained auspicious status. On the day of Akshaya Tritiya, devotees fast in honor of Lord Rishabhadeva, also referred to as Lord Adinath.

The mythology of Akshaya Tritiya

Even though many people regard the day as advantageous, there are a number of myths and traditions surrounding Akshaya Tritiya that elevate it to a fortunate occasion. A few of the legends found in Hindu mythology are as follows:

The Akshaya Patra

On the day of Akshaya Tritiya in the Mahabharata, Lord Sun gave a vessel to the Pandavas, who were in exile. Akshaya Patra, which means “inexhaustible vessel,” was a holy vessel that provided sustenance on a constant basis. In another story, during the exile of the Pandavas, a guru comes to their house to meet them. Having no offering for the sage, Draupadi offered Lord Krishna an empty bowl that was once filled with rice. Krishna stuck to the cup and found a grain of rice still stuck on it and he swallowed it, probably because of the hunger he was feeling. After that Krishna felt full. All creatures and the universe were thereby satisfied. The day was known as Akshaya Tritiya, and the same vessel became known as Akshaya Patra.

Treta Yug’s Emergence

According to the legends, Goddess Durga and Mahishasura engaged in a bloody, protracted war that ended with the asura’s defeat at the hands of the goddess. That day was considered to be the conclusion of the Satya Yuga and the beginning of the Treta Yuga, the second of the four yugas, according to the holy Puranas. Ever since, people have celebrated Akshaya Tritiya as the start of a new era.

 Krishna And Suddama’s Reunion

One of the fairs held on this special occasion is the meeting of Lord Krishna with friends from childhood named Sudama. Sudama had come to Dwarka on Akshaya Tritiya, which is an auspicious day according to the Hindu calendar, after his wife compelled him to approach his old friend for financial help. An humiliated Sudama turned away from offering any assistance after witnessing Krishna’s extravagant wealth and departed without even giving him the packet of rice flakes he had brought as a gift for Lord Krishna. Krishna ate the rice flakes after discovering them as a symbol of their heavenly friendship. When Sudama returned, he was shocked to see that his hut had been replaced with an opulent castle. He discovered his entire family attired in regal splendor. Sudama realized instantly that they had been blessed with riches by Lord Krishna. On this day, people celebrate Akshaya Tritiya, a day of wealth.
